Default OT-Link for MAC computers - 07-12-2004 , 08:56 PM

We are trying to link to a .WMV file and there are issues with it playing.

We were told that the link to for the MAC should start mms://URL to the
movie file itself.

1. What is mms?

Thanks!

?????

Just link to the .wmv file like you would any other file. When the user
clicks on it, if they have Windows Media Player it will play, otherwise it
will ask if they want to download it.

What issues are you having?

It is set up to stream, and when viewing it on a mac, when you click on the
link, nothing opens up.

We'll have to wait for one of the streaming video experts around here to
chime in on this, but a quick search turns up things like: "ASX is a
playlist file used to reference streams. ASX is also used because
Non-Internet Explorer browsers do not process MMS URL s."

Apparently it's a URL form to use when you're using a streaming server
set-up for a WMP file. It was news to me!

mms is a protocol. Like HTTP or FTP:

It stands for "Microsoft Media Server". It's proprietary, and I think it's
actually outdated now with the newer Media Players not needing it. But I'm
not absolutely sure.

If you want to REALLY cater to your Mac users, offer another version of the
video in Quicktime. Actually, some Windows users will even thank you. ;o)

As for your current problem, is the Mac you are using to test things on set
up with Media Player? Have you tried an HTTP link?
