Default Open Browser Window - 07-05-2008 , 03:22 PM

Client asks is it possible for

"links on the right hand side to open to separate pages?"

I queried "Open new browser window?" and the answer was Yes. Some links are
internal, some external. Am I right in thinking the Open Browser Window will
work for all? I've never used it and thought I'd check since these are
template-based pages and I didn't want to wade into deep, muddy water.

Yes, albeit it's a PITA from a usability point of view. Why does the
client want the links opening in new windows?

Because of more windows being open?

Good question, I'll ask.

Yep. Particularly in this day and age of tabbed browsing, it's easy to
get lost in a sea of open browser windows.

Done properly, there is no reason that multiple windows will open.
Using target="_blank" will indeed spawn multiple windows, as will the
simple form of javascript's window.open(). You might want to take a
look my divaPOP and divaPOPgold. They each open one new window (or tab)
and reuse that window over and over.

I meant also to give a link showing how one window can be re-used by
divaPOP/gold. Here we are opening images, but any page, internal or
external to the site, can be opened similarly.
