Seriously:

When someone is replying to a thread/post that's so old you don't have
it cached/saved in your computer. If you increase the number of posts
your newsreader should remember (or tell in to keep them longer), you'll
get the entire thread. Or at least several posts from the same thread.

I think when a web forums user clicks "reply" rather than the quick reply at
the bottom of the page, that shows up as a standalone RE: post in the
newsgroup.
