Default NOOP ftp command causes upload disconnect! - 11-10-2004 , 10:19 PM

I have a client site that I have a lot of trouble uploading files to. I am
using Dreamweaver as I always do and I have never had this problem before. The
following is the last few lines of the FTP LOG: PORT 4,249,129,54,4,178 200
PORT command successful. LIST 150 Opening ASCII mode data connection for
/bin/ls (54 bytes). drwxrw-rw- 1 root root 0 Aug 26 10:52 images 226
Transfer successful. NOOP 200 NOOP command not allowed. Goodbye! QUIT 221 You
have been kicked! 221 You have been banned. USER rfm Please note five lines up
from the bottom the command NOOP. It seems to have caused me to be kicked off
the server and banned? Not only was I kicked off but I was also prevented from
reconnecting. Does anybody know what this 'NOOP' is or what might be going on
here. The client's IT consultant who also maintains the server in his home has
told the client that this is because I only have a dial-up connection. Any
help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Michael

Operands

The NOOP subcommand has no parameters.

Usage Notes

o If the foreign host is responding, you receive one of the following
responses.

200 OK
or
200 NOOP command successful

You are prompted for the next FTP subcommand after the message is
displayed, unless the EXIT parameter of the FTP command is active.

I appreciate your response very much. Remember, I'm not actually entering
these commands and subcommands, Dreamweaver is! I assume the NOOP command is
sent from my computer to the server? What is NOOP for? What action is my
computer soliciting from the server? Why would this NOOP cause the server not
only to exit me, but ban me? (It actually seems more like a time out than a
ban. It seems to go away after a couple of hours and I can connect again.)
Thanks, Michael

OK, so I've done a little investigation. NOOP stands for 'no operation'. It
is Dreamweaver site checking to make sure the Host ftp server is still paying
attention. Dreamweaver will do this in intervals of inactivity.
Unfortunately, some servers don't like to be poked or 'NOOPed'. So they will
actually disconnect and ban ftp clients who have ftp software using NOOPs to
stay connected. I'm smarter (I think), but I still don't know how to fix the
problem. Does anyone know how to turn off NOOPing in Dreamweaver Site? Is
there another Macromedia forum I should be posting this problem on? Thanks,
Michael
