NLST problem with Msoft FTP server?

I'm having a problem with NLST with the FTP server my webhost uses.
Originally, I started having problems working with my DW site (i.e. when I
updated files on the server) -- the FTP server would just suddenly
disconnect and leave DW waiting (and waiting...).

I've narrowed down the culprit to the NLST command. (I can reproduce the
error in DW MX *and* another FTP client -- FTP-Voyager.) My webhost is
running Microsoft FTP server 5.0.

Has anyone else had this problem with NLST?
Is there any way to change/configure DW MX so that it uses the LIST command
in lieu of NLST?
