Default New Library Items - Not Validating - 03-25-2009 , 10:03 AM

I can't seem to get my Library Items to validate. I just created a new Library
Item and only added a graphic. I then attempted to validate it and it showed
three errors.

Show us the code in this LBI file, please.

Don't worry about it. Because a Library item is just a code fragment, it
may never validate. I'm at a loss, however, as to why you would make a
single image into a Library item - there is certainly no benefit to that
that I can think of.

And by the way, when we ask to see code, an image is usually not the best
way to do that. Either paste the code into a reply or give a link to the
live page.

Oy! I am darned if I do and darned if I don't. I appreciate the fact that you
are willing to "help" but I get the feeling that us GoLive users are a bit of
an annoyance. I often have not posted because of my embarrassment, but then
decided to quit worrying about it. Anyway the only reason I used the single
item is because I was "experimenting" with the Library items using a simple
image. Thank you for your response.

I feel like you have misinterpreted my comments too harshly. Please - I
meant no offense.

I'm sorry for my reaction Murray. It seems every day trying to move from GoLive
to DreamWeaver (while trying to do everything according to newer standards) is
an uphill battle. It wears me down.

I appreciate the fact that you respond to my threads. I just wish the answers
could come easier, without having to justify everything I do, and that
communication could work better.

One example is the thread where I was asking a general question about
comparing GL with DW's settings and behavior. It had nothing to do with a
particular website, but was asked for a link to see the code.

Based on a reply from you I think I understand why though. It's because you
get these posts via a reader, you often are missing previous information, and
have no way of knowing what was initially said.

Nevertheless, I am one tired designer, trying to fulfill my commitments, while
having to solve one problem after another on a daily basis. Please forgive my
harsh response previously.

so- what was the validation error-and- do pages you insert this library item
into validate?

Alan, You and Murray are right. When I create a new library item and insert it
into the page, the library item doesn't validate but the page it was inserted
into does.

Thank you!

Linda:

It's no problem. We want to make this transition as easy as possible for
you, but you will need to remember that DW is VERY different than GL (as I
am sure you already understand). One of the largest differences is that
most of the responses on the GL forums are OPERATIONAL (e.g., click here,
select that, etc.) while most of the responses here are CODE-based (e.g.,
change this to this, and this to this, etc.). This means that most
responders will ask you for your code or to see a link to a live page, and
in fact, that's the very best way to troubleshoot and solve any web
development problems, even those that are only seen inside Dreamweaver.
This difference may take some adjustment on your part. You can definitely
flatten that adjustment curve by taking the time to study some HTML and CSS,
meanwhile.

Do you feel like we ask you to do that?

Not necessarily so. For example, if you start a thread today, and someone
replies next week, I can still see the previous post in my local 'scroll' of
messages. However, if you post two months ago, and then add some
information today, it's likely I won't see the original post. Also, if you
post today, and then EDIT that post, nobody using NNTP access will see those
edits. Perhaps that's what you are referring to?

Of course, all this will go away when Adobe kills NNTP forums in the near
future.... 8( I fear that many of the really good regulars will also vanish
when that happens.

Question about applying a style to a library item:

In GoLive, you can apply custom styles within a Component, but it appears not
so in DW with Library Items.

What is the best way to apply a custom style to a Library Item? I'm reading up
on it now. It appears that only general styles within the HTML page are
applied, such as p and body. Do I need to make a special div for the item in
order to apply a class style?
