New happenings with "Put"

I have recently returned to using "Put" to upload to my sites. After
2 or 3 days of satisfactory operation I am now getting additional
files with LCK and 000 extensions and folders named _baks and _notes.

In addition the preview loads to the site where previously it would
open IE on my own machine.

What did I do to start this?

or did you click the checkbox for Contribute in this site's Site Definition?

Yes I had ticked the Conribute option because I had planned to use the
facility in the future.

Is there a problem with Contribute?

I have now removed the tick for contribute.

I still get those files and I can no longer view the site in preview,

What do I do now?
