Default Need help w/ fundies of Linking. - 12-24-2003 , 03:14 PM

Hi,

Just starting to learn the fundamentals.
Trial MX04 & 10.2.8

I have a practice site which contains an image folder and (2) html pages.

I am able to import a jpeg to each of the pages individually and pics show in browser.
The snag is when I link one page to the other, the second page has a broken picture link icon(no pic).
I used the Command L key. What am I doing wrong?

Also, I can't seem to find the Link Map.

Thanks,

Alex

This is how DMX will work if you are using ROOT RELATIVE links, *and*
temporary files to preview.

Here's an example -

* I create a page with a link to an image -> <img src="/images/foo.gif">
(note that the image link is a root relative link)
* I preview that page with DMX (since I am using temp files, DMX is kind
enough to realize that root relative links won't work in a preview, and so
it converts them to document relative links when it builds the temporary
file for the preview) -> <img src="../images/foo.gif"> (I'm assuming that
your document is one level below the root of the site). In the preview,
this page looks fine because the browser has no trouble with the document
relative link - it knows where the file it just opened is, and can follow
the path to the image).
* I then click on a link in the previewed page to another page that also has
ROOT relative linked images --> <img src="/images/bar.gif"> and suddenly
the image does not load.

Why? Because when you click away from the temp file DMX just built for you,
you have lost the benefit of the automatic conversion that DMX does with
root relative links, and the browser looks for this new image starting from
the root of the hard drive, not the root of your site.

The solution is to not use root relative links, and to change all your
existing ones to document relative.

Hi and thanks Murray,
(trial&10.2.8)

Still doing something wrong. I am coming from Freeway where the Image folder/structure is made by default once you save anything. I can do it in Claris Home Page but..
Also, I am fairly new to Macs & mybrainiskindasmallish.

Sometimes the simple things can be problematic so here goes: ( + means check mark)

Site>Manage Sites> New

Site Definition Box-- Basic Tab
What would you like to name your site--baseball NEXT

+No, I do not want to use server techn.. NEXT

+Edit local copies on my machine..
Where on your computer do you want to store your files?
I click the Folder icon then HDD>Users>Shared> and click New folder button
Name of new folder; wrigleyfield CREATE, then CHOOSE
Then NEXT

How do you connect to new remote server?
Set to: Local/Network
What folder on your server do you want to store your files in?
I click the Folder icon, then I click New Folder button and name it --chicago CREATE,CHOOSE
+ refresh remote files...NEXT
(pause for air)

+ do not enable check in/outNEXT

Now back on Site Definition Window

Local info: site name: baseball
Local Root Folder: HDD:Users:Shared:wrigleyfield.
Remote info: Access Local/Network
Remote folder: HDD/Users/Shared/wrigleyfield/chicago
check in/out: disabled
Test server: ..later..
DONE

This must not be correct? What did I do wrong?

To further help understand the structure of things;
In this example which folder actually gets uploaded to Server? My guess is wrigleyfield and that
chicago is a subsitute for the folder my Hosting Co. tells me??

Finally, now when I'm in PS and crop to size, then SaveAs, where do I save it?
Very slowly please.

Thanks,

Alex

Don't blame your brain for being trained by icky do-it-for-you baby programs.
You're just all growed up now and using a big boy program. YAY! 1 gold star
for Alex.

Uhh...do you not want to FTP your stuff to your remote host? If you do, then
this is all wrong. Choose FTP, not Local/Network. Then put all your FTP stuff
in there incl. password & so on. Your host should give that to you. If they
didn't give it to you when you signed up, pelt them in the head with AOL 16.0
(or whaterver) discs that you find in the mailbox. That oughta teach 'em.

Probably Remote Server. Make the changes I suggested and test server. Not
later. NOW. I'll wait....<whistles>

Your server will probably give you a folder that has a cgi-bin and and folder
for your html documents at the very least. Sometimes the html folder is called
public_html, htmldocs, etc. Make sure that if your site must go in this folder
that you have put the name of it in the host directory field of the advanced
tab of your Site Definitions dialogue box. It should read public_html/ or some
such thing if this is the case. Then when you're ready to upload you click
upload and voila, there ya go. DW puts the files from your local wigglyfield
(haha...sorry, that's what I called it as a kid folder, to your public_html
(or whatever) folder.

My

Eh? Not following. Too much time spent with relatives has made my brain into
jello.

Finally, now when I'm in PS and crop to size, then SaveAs, where do I
Quote:

Export it to an image file w/in wrigleyfield.

So your directory should be something like this

wrigleyfield/ stash all your html files here
wrigleyfield/images/ stash all your jpgs and gifs in here
wrigleyfield/assets/ style sheets, js, etc

That's a basic thingy. Just don't ask me what a thingy is.

Then when you put an image on your page, click insert > image (or click the
image icon on the insert tab) and browse to the image in your image folder.
Make sure in the bottom of the dialogue box that it says Relative To:
ocument - NOT relative to Site.

Then save the page > File > Save As > blah.html. It'll automatically save in
the wigglyfield folder.

Then you make another page, insert another image, save as blah2.html.

Then what do you want to do? Wasn't sure by your first message what it was you
were trying to accomplish. Do you want to make a link out of the image? If so,
select the image and in the Link Field of the Properties Inspector (Henceforth
known as the PI), browse to the html file, or grab the wee round target next to
the browse button and drag it to the file in the site panel, or type it into
the link field by hand.

Do you want to link one image to the other image? Okies.

w/ both pages open, make a "named anchor" out of the image on blah2.html. What
you're acutally going to do is give it a name or an "id". So let's name image 2
on blah2.html "image2". I was going to suggest "Gladys", but I guess I should
just be practical, eh?

Select the image and then in the PI type image2 into the name field, which is
just to the right of the wee picture and below the bit that tells you the file
size. It's at the top left of the PI. Save the page.

Then go back to blah1 and type blah2.html#image2 into the link field. # is
equal to ID. You can also create named anchors and link to them by dragging
that wee target thingy to them.

Hope this made sense. It's 30 minutes till midnight and I've finished stuffing
stockings and getting ready for Christmas morning and my daughter is snoring
away in the next room and I'm kinda over-tired so I may be a bit rambly...if
that's even a word :-D

Happy Ho Ho

Thanks,

It's just a practice site (not to Server) so I kept it Local/Network.

The part about Relative to Document and NOT Relative to Site, Wow what a difference that made!!
I never would have thought to look there.

I'll have to keep an eye open for any other games DMX might try to play.

AOL... I don't have a copy of Tigerbeat magazine handy but
I'll bet you 5 bucks they advertise "Heavy" in there.

Take care,

Alex

Then simply choose "None". Not local/Network.

It's not something a newbie would think of and even some experienced users
space it. So no worries!

LOL! I just found a box of old posters of The English Beat, Duran Duran, Adam
Ant, etc., that I cut out of Tigerbeat magazine in the early 80's...wonder how
much my 20-year-old Tigerbeats would sell for on Ebay? .25, maybe 50 cents?
:-D
