My quotation marks are now wacky in code view

Hi there,
I've had this problem for months but is hasn't posed too big of an issue until recently. Whenever I write JavaScript into my code (or Html for that matter) I get this strange phenomenon where I type in a doube quote and a single quote gets placed into the code or visa-versa. When I check the source code on the page in IE it looks perfect and of course as long as I type it in correctly the code runs perfectly, but it can get a bit confusing when I am editing code that has plenty of single and double quotes. Has anyone had this issue before and is there a patch, fix, or some preference change I can make so this won't act this way?
I've looked through the forums for a simalar issue with no success but I thought i would ask incase I missed some white paper on this.
