my button won't stop flashing

I have a button which I have redone several times. It keeps flashing, even
showing the hit state. It doesn't seem to matter which graphic I stick in
there, it just keeps flashing away regardless. If I swap the button to another
one that is working fine in another area, it does the same thing. There are no
actions appied to it. Does anyone have any ideas why it is doing this? It is
part of a movie with separate sections for a navigation.

Absolutely. This is part of the top navigation system, so it starts with a
movie clip, and then when the movement is over, I changed it to a button for
the home page. It should stay the same from here throughout the rest of the
file, although the playhead moves from one frame to another through the
navigation.

While you're at it, I'd love it if someone could tell me the correct way to do
these popup menus. I have them set up so they change on each frame "home",
"about", etc, but they just stay up once the user rolls over them, unless they
roll over another button. I'd like them to hide again after, but if I do that,
then the popups hide when you go off the button itself, so you can click on any
of the sub menus. I also tried putting the popups into the button itself, but
I used text links and they didn't seem to work that way. How can these be done
properly?

I've played around with it some more. It is very strange, but it seems that
Flash doesn't like the graphic (I'm guessing, though). It works with it fine
through the movie clip, but as soon as I try to use it as a button, it goes
wierd. Now it is making the logo turn red as soon as it gets to the button, and
there is no red in the logo at all. Plus the lines (which are masked in the
type) are showing up as full lines and the mask disappears. Very strange. Does
flash normally have problems with complex graphics from Freehand or
Illustrator? The button does work ok if I just use a jpg, with no other
states. But it looks terrible.
