Default Murray? Brad? A little Template help, Please? - 07-07-2003 , 11:40 PM

I've read and read and still can't figure out how to do this, although I'm sure
it's in the book somewhere. I've read what *might* be right, but I'm still
lost!

Ok, so here's the thing. I've got the site which will have subsections. Within
the subsections there will be a submenu which changes with each section. On the
home page the space where the submenu would be is a graphic.

Here's what I've done:
-I've made the multiple if to change the section image according to the
page_name param
-I've made the menu so that according to the page_name the menu image is
over/unlinked or up/linked.

Here's what I want to do:
-I want to know how to put different table elements (submenus) in the submenu
div according to page_name or section name (or however it might best be done).
-Then I want to make the submenu buttons work just as the main menu buttons do,
in the over state when on specific page, etc. I think I can do this just as I
did with the main menu, but don't know how, since I don't get how to do the
submenu thingy I just mentioned.

I guessed that it would be dealing with a nested template, but then don't know
how to make that submenu area which only has a one td table on the home page
and different numbers of td's in subsequent sections editable, yet still
controlled someone by a template so that they're the same in each section.

Does that make any sense whatsoever?? I'm tired and my brain is jelly.
Here are some links:
link to template: http://www.flyingtigerwebdesign.com/Templates/ftwd_main.dwt
link to home page based on template: http://www.flyingtigerwebdesign.com/
-both home and services links work. If you click on the services link it will
take you to a page that will show you as far as I've come with this template.
link to services page (as an example) as I'd like to have submenus look:
http://www.flyingtigerwebdesign.com/services.html

Thanks in advance and sorry if this was in any way vague!

Even though it's still in beta, you still might want to consider our
product, Nested Templates, that uses Dreamweaver MX.

If you are interested in being a beta tester, please send a simple message

Just a hint here. I realize you are anxious to bring people into the beta
program for what appears to me to be an interesting product. But by simply
posting a recommendation to each template related post, even when that
recommendation has nothing to do with the question being asked, will soon
begin to alienate people. If you can actually help with the problem, or
think you can, then please fire away....

Err...yes...but the one thing I have been having great trouble with (in regards
to templates & your book!) is Optional Regions. So although you're "close to
the concepts that might help," you're still speakin' Chinese at this point
I'll read the post again when I'm back from the bus stop and then see if I can
make more sense out of it.

Thanks, Murray!

OK - I get what you are asking. And I think that there are several ways you
can do this.

One way (perhaps the simplest but also the least bandwidth conservative)
would be to put *all* your submenus on the template page in divs that are
shown and hidden by a template parameter in an embedded stylesheet, like
this -

style
!--
#subdiv1 { visibility:@@(page_name=="foobar"?'visible':'hidde n')@@; }
--
/style

This is the method I have used on

http://www.raphaelarchitects.com

to control the section navigation element that only appears on the Process
pages (you can see the template at -

http://www.raphaelarchitects.com/Templates/page.dwt )

but it *does* require that the hidden layer's content is always written to
all the pages, even though that layer will never be shown on those pages.

A second method (and a more bandwidth conservative one) would be to make
that internal navigation be part of an Optional Region, whose condition is
set based on the page_name parameter. In this way, if the condition fails,
then the Optional Region's content is never even written to the child page.
You can even 'dynamically' adjust the values of some Template Parameters
based on the value of other Template Parameters, like this -

!-- TemplateBeginIfClause cond="(PageName=='Foo')" --> <!--
@@(Snark1=true)@@@@(Snark2=true)@@@@(Snark3=false) @@@@(Snark4=false)@@@@(Sna
rk5=false)@@@@(Snark6=false)@@@@(Snark7=false)@@ --> <!--
TemplateEndIfClause --

In this case, the successful test for a PageName of "Foo" causes the values
of all the other mentioned Parameters to be set. Then other Conditional
Regions that test those Parameters will adjust accordingly.

Am I even close to the concepts that might help you?

DiMa:

Please have a seat. Here. Drink this frosty mint julep <or marguerita,
depending on your personal preferences>.

Now.

The Template page will have a number of Optional Regions on it - one for
each submenu. Those submenus will not be editable on the child pages, but
each child page will be able to select which Optional Region will be shown
by using MODIFY | Template Properties....

Remember the example I showed at my presentation at TODCON?

In that case, I used the very simple example of how to fix the button in the
down state for a particular page. On the template page, I insert the
upstate button and then I insert the downstate button immediately beside it.
I select the downstate and make it an Optional Region with a name of
button1down. I set it to *NOT* show by default. Then I select the upstate
button and make it an Optional Region, but instead of using the BASIC tab, I
use the ADVANCED tab and enter an expression -

!button1down

which says "if button1down is false, then show this button, otherwise don't
show it."

When you look at the TEMPLATE file, you will now see two buttons in the menu
for button1, but in the child page you will only see 1 of those buttons, and
the one you see will depend on the value of the parameter called
"button1down".

Get it?

If you are feeling really frustrated with this, then just zip the site and
send it to me - I'll make it happen for ya! 8)

optional region is, by default, not editable, how can I change it (since
there
are a different number of submenu buttons/table cells) in each section?
I'm
guessing I should make a section_name parameter and then depending on the
section_name a completely different table should be inserted? I dunno. I'm
lost!! Wasn't that apparent? I don't even know what to put IN the
Optional

I
reeeeally don't want to add any extra page weight. It's already heftier

to
implement this at all, especially since it's uneditable and there will be

unlinked/over state of the button show according to the page_name
parameter.

Oh my head hurts

Am I making any sense? Am I being a complete bonehead?? ....don't answer

OK - I get what you are asking. And I think that there are several
ways
you
can do this.

One way (perhaps the simplest but also the least bandwidth
conservative)
would be to put *all* your submenus on the template page in divs
that
are
shown and hidden by a template parameter in an embedded stylesheet,
like
this -

style
!--
#subdiv1 {
visibility:@@(page_name=="foobar"?'visible':'hidde n')@@; }
--
/style

This is the method I have used on

http://www.raphaelarchitects.com

to control the section navigation element that only appears on the
Process
pages (you can see the template at -

http://www.raphaelarchitects.com/Templates/page.dwt )

but it *does* require that the hidden layer's content is always
written
to
all the pages, even though that layer will never be shown on those
pages.

A second method (and a more bandwidth conservative one) would be to
make
that internal navigation be part of an Optional Region, whose
condition
is
set based on the page_name parameter. In this way, if the condition
fails,
then the Optional Region's content is never even written to the
child
page.
You can even 'dynamically' adjust the values of some Template
Parameters
based on the value of other Template Parameters, like this -

!-- TemplateBeginIfClause cond="(PageName=='Foo')" --> <!--

@@(Snark1=true)@@@@(Snark2=true)@@@@(Snark3=false) @@@@(Snark4=false)@@@@(Sna
rk5=false)@@@@(Snark6=false)@@@@(Snark7=false)@@ --> <!--
TemplateEndIfClause --

In this case, the successful test for a PageName of "Foo" causes the
values
of all the other mentioned Parameters to be set. Then other
Conditional
Regions that test those Parameters will adjust accordingly.

Am I even close to the concepts that might help you?
