They are morons. Of course there is such a thing - it's usually ht_docs, or
something like that. Sometimes your login takes you directly to the root of
the hosting account and sometimes it takes you directly to the root of the
website *within* the hosting account. You can tell where you are by
connecting and looking at what you see in the remote folder list.

The reason I am asking about paths and directories is because I have tried
linux and dreamweaver with a smaller site and in the site dialog box I was
unable to specify the host directory.
The guys at my webhosting explained there was no such thing , so in order
to
use the DW "put" function I had to build an identical local directory
hierarchy
(hope you're with me!) . Now that's okay for a small site, but for my
bigger
site I fear there will be problems.

Hi there!

I have a dreamweaver built site which consists of aprox 140 html pages, with
video, audio, text etc. In order to create a paid login section for the site I
have been adviced to change to a linux server instead of windows. I have now
decided to do so.

However, I am worried of how the switch will work out..

1)I don't know anything about linux, will I be able to continue to work with
dreamweaver as I have always done, puting/uploading files etc..?

2)Will there be a substantial amount of new technical aspects to learn + new
site configurations?

I transferred all my sites to Linux servers, and it stopped some jerk
who was hacking my sites in my tracks. My webhosting advisor told me
Microsoft is a joke; I believe there are special problems with FrontPage
extensions. (After you move to a Linux server, make sure your FrontPage
extensions are turned OFF; you don't want any association with
Microsoft. In my C-Panel, I have a choice between turning FrontPage
extensions on or off.)

I wasn't aware of the letter case issues, and it caused me a lot of
grief. Actually, I don't think everything has to be lower case on a
Linux server; I think it's just that your links have to match your URL,
like this...

<a href="www.geobop.org/horses">Horses</a> for a page named horses.php

Not this:

<a href="www.geobop.org/Horses">Geobop</a> for the same page.

I'm working on a CMS site right now, and I believe I have lots of pages
that use capital letters.

Administering my sites with Dreamweaver is simple. I do write PHP,
because I'm working on various PHP scripts and projects. But uploading
them doesn't require anything special.

Apache and Linux are the STANDARD web server platform for a reason -
they don't suck.

Nobody said that. What was said is that you have to be "case aware" on a
*nix server.

If you use "Images" as a folder name, you cannot then reference it as
"images".
