It means your log-in failed. Bad username? Bad password? Incorrect path?

You need to deal with the host to fix this. And, needless to say, you tend
to get what you pay for when it comes to support.

There is 4 possible reasons for this. Actually 5, but the 5th one is unlikely.

1. Your IP/domain you entered is incorrect.
2. Your username is wrong.
3. Your password is wrong.
4. Your host doesn't allow FTP, some free hosts don't.
5. Your host is offline.

#5 is unlikely but you never know it could happen... if 1-4 isn't the case and
they are not offlined then you should probably email the host and ask for
assistance, it might be a permissions or server problem which you are not aware
of.

When you connect to your web site via Dreamweaver, it has to connect to either
a IP address, or a domain name. (If the domain isn't registerred yet then
you'll need the IP)

domain: www.somethinglikethis.com

or a series of numbers, like this...

IP: 165.74.253.65

and thats it. any ideas??
There should be an FTP log in DW. Open that up and cut-and-paste the result
in here.

SITE >> ADVANCED >> FTP LOG

Also, often, when FTPing, your URL for FTP access may be completely
different than the URL of your web site.

Often, your url may be this:

http://www.mywebsite.com

but your FTP URL might be this:

ftp://www.yourwebhost.com/~yourusername/html/

it would appear i didnt put the correct password in, but it hasnt sovled my
problem. i did put my www.sometlike this.com thing in but it didnt ask for my
ip.
now the password is correct but it now says: an FTP error occured - cannot
make connection to host 530- then is says
================================================== ============================
and thats it. any ideas??

The domain to log in to is usually not "www.mysite.com" but
"ftp.mysite.com". See the difference?
However, why not contact freeservers.com directly? Since free accounts
won't get any other support, use their forum:

in particular this section:
