Default Metatag Protocol question from newbie - 07-14-2003 , 08:46 AM

I've been away from web design for awhile and coming back into it.
What is the present protocol for metatags? As I recall there was a magic
not-to-exceed number of times that a word or phrase could appear on any
given page before it would become an issue with the search engines.
Also, if there's any general overview site someone could point my too
regarding metatags, I'd appreciate it.
I've just searched the archives here, and much to my surprise I found
nothing.
Maybe they're not used anymore.........?
Thanks
John

John

The W3C gives the standards for meta tags at
http://www.w3.org/TR/REC-html40/struct/global.html#h-7.4.4

I still use them, but I agree with John that they're almost worthless
nowadays.

Wow! I'm amazed.
Well, is there any reason NOT to use them?
I'm thinking if there's no downside and a potential additional benefit to
using them, that I still will.
Would that be a mistake?
The last "magic number" I remember hearing from a few year ago was 7, as
being the number of times not to exceed on any particular tag before it
would become self-defeating. Is that still true?

Thanks.

John:

You have the porn industry to thank for the 'deprecation' of the meta tag.
I frankly don't think your content in those areas will make any difference
at all....

Huh? I realize that the porn industry has always been at the forefront of
pushing the envelope on the web. But isn't the demise of metatags a step
backwards?
Unless, you're suggesting that things have advanced so far that they're just
not necessary anymore. Is that what you mean?

John:

Yes - that's what I mean. The SE's now use quite sophisticated algorithms
for parsing the page's importance and content from the readable information
on the page, the use of <h1>, <h2>, <strong>, alt tags, image file names,
location on the page, etc., etc., etc. Meta tags become quite useless in
this context, since you can put anything you want in the meta tags with no
regard for page content.

Yikes!
This opens up a whole other can of worms for me.
It's finally beginning to sink in what a problem frames can be, i.e. search
engines taking searchers to one particular frame of one of my 3-frame pages.
Well, that's an issue for another day.

For now, other than meta-tags, what is the best way of making sure that
searchers find my site?

John:

Depending on your expertise and the size of the site, I would use the
frames' pages to build a template, and copy and paste content into spawned
child pages.

Frames will be a nightmare for you....

Each page has a left hand navigation bar, along with a sub-navigation bar
at
the top that opens for each of the links from the left bar.
Is there some relatively easy way to de-frame it?
What would I do, put it all into tables, instead?

Yikes!
This opens up a whole other can of worms for me.
It's finally beginning to sink in what a problem frames can be, i.e.
search
engines taking searchers to one particular frame of one of my 3-frame
pages.
Well, that's an issue for another day.

For now, other than meta-tags, what is the best way of making sure
that
searchers find my site?

Yes - that's what I mean. The SE's now use quite sophisticated
algorithms
for parsing the page's importance and content from the readable
information
on the page, the use of <h1>, <h2>, <strong>, alt tags, image file
names,
location on the page, etc., etc., etc. Meta tags become quite
useless
in
this context, since you can put anything you want in the meta tags
with
no
regard for page content.

Well, is there any reason NOT to use them?
I'm thinking if there's no downside and a potential additional

Would that be a mistake?

I've been away from web design for awhile and coming back
into
it.
What is the present protocol for metatags? As I recall
there
was
a
magic
not-to-exceed number of times that a word or phrase could
appear
on
any
given page before it would become an issue with the search
engines.
Also, if there's any general overview site someone could
point
my
too
regarding metatags, I'd appreciate it.
I've just searched the archives here, and much to my
surprise
I
found
nothing.
Maybe they're not used anymore.........?
Thanks

Great! These look like useful sites.

Well, having just completed a large site based on a 3-frame per page
concept, I'm bummed.
Each page has a left hand navigation bar, along with a sub-navigation bar at
the top that opens for each of the links from the left bar.
Is there some relatively easy way to de-frame it?
What would I do, put it all into tables, instead?
