Default Major font issues - 11-10-2005 , 11:41 AM

using dreamweaver 2004

I have 2 htm files open. a client wants 1 page to display geneva and one page
to display helvetica. here is the problem...the font list for each page is
different. I am so completely confused with font families and all of this
stuff....I don't have helvetica or geneva in my available fonts yet they are
there in dreamweaver...I assume that these are mac only fonts? then why have
them in dreamweaver for windows? sigh I am just totally confused. If I put
geneva and helvetica as the fonts for these pages. will it show up for someone
on a mac? Thanks for any help in advance. I really want to know why each page
shows a different font list. what I really wish was that there was just a font
reset or something.

Although they started life as Mac-only fonts, I think that Helvetica at
least is on most PCs these days. At least PCs with MS Office. Nonetheless,
the font family is designed to address a lot of the concerns you're
expressing.
If your font family is "Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif", then the user will
see the first font in that list that's available on their computer.
"sans-serif" is just a generic font style; the browser will use its default
sans-serif font if it gets that far in the list.

So, for this user, if he wants Helvetica, flip-flop it with Arial in the
normal font family for those fonts, so "Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif". If
he wants Geneva, there's a pretty standard font-family to use, namely
"Geneva, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif".

Here is a list of common fonts on both PC and Mac.

http://www.ampsoft.net/webdesign-l/WindowsMacFonts.html

The list of Dreamweaver fonts will set the page for that particular font
if the end user has it installed on their computer. For example if you
use this for your font:

Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif

Then the browser will use Arial as the primary font, if this is not
installed on the user's computer then is will use Helvetica. If
Helvetica is also not available it will then use a generic sans-serif font.

Hope this helps.

It should be noted that Arial and Helvetica aren't the best choice for
on-screen viewing. You may want to consider trebuchet, tahoma, verdana,
and/or bitstream vera instead...all faces designed specifically for the
screen.

You can find a list of safe web fonts and font family at:
http://www.ampsoft.net/webdesign-l/WindowsMacFonts.html

It is a list of the fonts that are safely assumed to be installed on all
PCs and Macs
