Default Macromedia upgrade policy - 08-04-2004 , 04:53 AM

In an era of rampant software piracy, MM seems to do little to encourage
customer loyalty with its upgrade policy. I can upgrade my MS Office from
Office 95 to Office XP but I can't upgrade my Dreamweaver 3 to Dreamweaver MX
without paying nearly $1,000 for a full version as opposed to just over $500
for the upgrade. I never received notification about newer versions nor about
the draconian policy. My EULA makes no mention of it.

Can one appeal to MM's better judgement? Can one buy a cheap Dreamweaver 4 to
qualify for the upgrade?

I have Dreamweaver 4/Fireworks 4 Studio and I'm about to upgrade to Studio
MX. I don't know how the upgrade process goes once I actually have the
software. Like -- suppose I upgrade version 4, then later reformat my hard
drive and reinstall everything. Would I need my Dreamweaver 4 disc again
to install Studio MX, or would my registration code take care of
everything?

I know Windows requires possession of an older disc for upgrading. I just
don't know about Studio MX yet. Any clues?

BEWARE: if you intend to use your copy of Studio over a network, using say,
Fireworks on one machine and Dreamweaver on another (as required by many
developers) you will be prevented from doing so by Macromedias spyware. This
'security feature' effectively turns the four stand-alone applications you used
to own into a single 'product' that you can't effectively distribute. It is a
bit of a con really.

Your DW4 Serial number is all you need.

Ed:

See my reply to your other post. Please don't say something like this
without verifying it first.

I assume you mean MX2004.

To answer your question, yes, if you can find a cheap version of DW4 or MX,
maybe on Ebay or at a swapmeet, it will work, as long as you have the serial
number.

And as long as it is a legal, updateable copy - NOT OEM, or Educational
version.

I don't care to distribute it around different computers. I own the most
powerful computer in the house, so I would naturally want it all right
here. :-)

I may be looking to sell my copy of Dreamweaver 4 once I get MX 2004. Am I
supposed to give him my current serial? If so, what happens when he goes
to register it at Macromedia.com? I've always wondered about selling
software I've already registered. I certainly wouldn't want to give him my
key to activate it and then get in trouble with Macromedia for it. And
then that might affect my ability to upgrade if it's found that two people
have submitted the same key. :-\
