You cannot do this. Selling the previous version after upgrading is a
violation of your EULA. The only way to sell it would be to completely
remove all previous and subsequent versions from your computer(s).
Furthermore, your serial number would not work for the hapless recipient
since you would also have used that S/N for the upgrade.

To answer your question, yes, if you can find a cheap version of DW4 or
MX,
maybe on Ebay or at a swapmeet, it will work, as long as you have the
serial
number.

I may be looking to sell my copy of Dreamweaver 4 once I get MX 2004. Am
I
supposed to give him my current serial? If so, what happens when he goes
to register it at Macromedia.com? I've always wondered about selling
software I've already registered. I certainly wouldn't want to give him
my
key to activate it and then get in trouble with Macromedia for it. And
then that might affect my ability to upgrade if it's found that two people
have submitted the same key. :-\

I have Dreamweaver 4/Fireworks 4 Studio and I'm about to upgrade to StudioMX.

BEWARE: if you intend to use your copy of Studio over a network, using say,
Fireworks on one machine and Dreamweaver on another (as required by many
developers) you will be prevented from doing so by Macromedias spyware. This
'security feature' effectively turns the four stand-alone applications you used
to own into a single 'product' that you can't effectively distribute. It is a
bit of a con really.
1) You don't own the software. You don't own ANY software except what
you develop yourself. You own a license to use it. Read the EULA.

2) If you bought Studio, you did not buy 4 separate, stand-alone
applications. You bought a suite of applications. The EULA very
specifically explains that.

3) In MX2004 (which is the only version you can now purchase direct
from MM, AFAIK) you can legally install on TWO machines. This is a
welcome change from their previous licensing system.

No con at all. A perfectly understandable, well-documented licensing
model.

Yeah, that's what I meant. Thanks for clarifying.

For the record, it didn't always used to be that way. I distinctly remember
buying DW 2 Educational version, then buying the upgrade to a later version
after I got out of school, and it accepted the DW 2. Don't remember what
the new version was, though.

As far as I know, the educational version has never been legally upgradable.
Whether you were actually prevented from using an educational S/N, I
dunno....

What about installing Studio MX 2004 on just one machine and installing
Dreamweaver 4 / Fireworks 4 on another computer? I'm thinking that since I
upgraded, instead of installing the new suite on two computers, I'll
install it on one and put Dreamweaver 4 on the computer in the other
bedroom for my friend. He's not very computer-savvy. He won't be out
making millions building web pages. The most he'll do is work on his AOL
Hometown webpage, which right now consists of three paragraphs of text, two
horizontal rules, and three hyperlinks. It's his first web page which he
created with AOL's online page constructor. And probably the most features
he'd use in DW4 would be the background color picker, maybe the text color
picker, along with adding a link or two. My god, it took him three years
to remember how to attach files in AOL's email interface. I don't think
he's going to be a threat to Macromedia's income anytime soon.

Maybe Macromedia should come out with an "I'm so clueless" version of
Dreamweaver. LOL!

To answer you question about selling registered software, there is a
facility on the MM site to notify a change in the registered owner of
software,
