Yeah, just in time for me to start using them. Hopefully it's brief; I'd
rather be typing this there than through my news reader.

Speaking of which, though, will these messages appear on the forums once
they're back up?

O.

Yes. All messages will be mirrored as I understand it, when the webforums
return.

But as long as you're here on the NNTP forums, why not hang around and give
them a try. Many of us prefer them for their speed and their reliability
(messages posted here sometimes do not show up on the webforum for hours).

Sure. I like news groups generally. But for areas where there are a
large number of posts, it's sometimes easier to browser the online
forums. Then again, I don't really know what this one looks like. I
should say I like browsing the PHP type forums.

Anyway, this is interesting stuff and doesn't seem to contain (knock
wood) any garbage. I gather from the FAQ periodically posted that it's
at least semi-moderated? So, yes, I'll stick around.

Is the general protocol to, when necessary for reference, post
screenshots on one's own server and link to them.

Thanks for the welcome mat, Murray. Very nice.

O.

It (of course) depends on your definition of garbage. Posts (sometimes over
600 a day) are made here by people at all skill levels and with every
imaginable agenda. Sometimes they are even made by people who are bored,
dingy, frustrated, or just plain angry, so the signal to noise ratio can
vary considerably. Having generated quite a bit of the noise, I know about
such things! 8) Notwithstanding this, I have never found another forum
where the answers come as fast or with such precision and accuracy as they
do here.

It is if you hold one eye closed. MM staff visit periodically, most often
in the guise of Scott Fegette, a benign and gnarled (but slightly crotchety)
refugee. Generally speaking, the community is self-policing - mostly
because the community is consistently large and dedicated to exchanging
information about web development.

Yes. Code is way better than screenshots, however, if possible, since all
answers lie in the code and not in the symptoms.

Aha! I finally have a reason to say why the web forum is better. :-) On the
web forum my post appears within seconds.

Only true if the only posts you rely on are your own. Most of the answers
come from the NNTP forum. And since most of the questions come from the
webforum, and poor link from NNTP to web often means that even though an
answer has been posted within 10 minutes of the question, the poster may not
get to see it for quite a long time....

Hey, all-
As you probably noticed (or may not have), the web forums are back up,
although the Search feature is unavailable for now while they re-optimize some
queries and such. I should note that this wasn't entirely a FuseTalk issue,
but a combination of SEVERE end-of-quarter traffic, some infrastructural issues
(both hardware and software), the lag in bringing things back was that the web
team wanted to make sure that things were tightened up first, and they're still
doing some work on the most draining features (i.e. Search) to make them leaner
and meaner for the future. I must say, it's rather nice to be able to post
from the web front end again- never realized how much I used it myself until
now.

Have a great weekend, all- and happy 4th of July to those stateside!

LOL
benign and crotchety, yes (symptoms of moderation)- but this would have
to be the first time I've been called 'gnarled'...
