Default mac change filenames to uppercase? - 05-17-2004 , 10:16 AM

Help! I work back and forth between a windows 2000 machine and a mac os x
jaguar machine. When I create website files on the pc and bring them over to
the mac the mac renames all the files in uppercase letters. Any ideas how to
fix this. It really screws up my website. Here's another funny thing. I saves a
website to a portable usb drive. When I look at the drive on a mac all the
files are in uppercase. When I look at the same files on a pc all file names
are in lowercase. If I transfer the files to the mac and back again to the pc
the file names stay uppercase. Any help would be appreciated.

What did you use to format the USB drive? I think you'll want to format it
on the windows machine for it to retain the filenames across platforms.

Sounds like the Mac is using an 8.3 compatability feature. What OS is this
(OS8, OS9)? MacOS X shouldn't be doing this, I don't think, but I've never
used a USB stick before.

Best regards,
Chris

The USB drive was formatted on the PC first. I am running jaguar on the mac.

use an archive utility to compress the Site Folder into a .zip or .sit file.
Then transfer the single archive file to the removable drive.
Then expand it on the other machine.
Filenames will stay the way they were.

It's a Windows thing. The same thing will happen if you burn a CD with the
files then copy them from the CD to another computer (at least it will to
another Windows computer). The best work-around I know is to ZIP up the
entire directory, save it to CD or Thumbdrive, then UNZIP it on the other
end and all filenames should come through just fine.

Thanks! that sounds like a logical fix. I'll give it a try.

Hmm...well, I'm stumped. I use a USB keychain drive to move between my PC
and OSX all the time and I don't have this issue. I thought it had to do
with the keychain's formatting but maybe not.

Sorry I'm not much help.

Thanx guys. I'm moving to panther soon and I hope it has a built in fix for this. Until then I'll just zip everything.

Aside: If you are upgrading, wait until Panther 10.4 is announced soon.
Or, you may miss the window of free upgrade. 10.4 is a chargeable
upgrade. I never did jaguar -- went from 9.1 to 10.3 and am getting to
like panther.
