Default Lock Images - 12-05-2005 , 05:43 PM

Is there a way to lock images and disable a users ability to download/save
images used?
We are using .asp etc... http://www.grand-benedicts.com/ and would like to
keep our images from being used on other sites.
Please let me know if you have any ideas.

No, once they're displayed on a website, they're basically downloaded
already. Any good web user is going to figure out how to take the
pictures if they wants.

I've never used one, but there are server side products that can add watermarks to your images. I know there are some for php and .net, but I'm pretty sure I've seen them for classic asp too.

And finally, to flat out answer your question:

No, there is not. Infact, even in Murray's example - the author uses a "no
right click" script, which happens to not work in the new Mozilla 1.5. You
can't avoid it. You're best bet, as suggested above (^) is to watermark your
images - but that can sometimes look tacky if you do it incorrectly.

You can only make it difficult, not prevent it. If your images are valuable
then you should invest in something like Digimark to watermark your images
invisibly, but also do it visibly as well. I took the view when designing my
site that if someone really wants to steal your designs theres not much you
can do to stop them.

I know that this can be got around but I hope it will prevent casual theft
by the less computer savvy,

http://www.ladybayartglass.co.uk/LeadLights/Portfolio.htm

If you right click on the thumbnail to get a main image in the display right
click on it and all you will see if the option to view background image,
select that and you see a copyright notice. The picture layer is overlain
with a mask layer which has a copyright notice offset out of normal view.
The image is still in your browsers cache so anyone can find it if they
really want to, but if you want people to see your images you will just have
to live the risks.

But in Firefox, if you click Tools->Page Info, then click the Media tab,
you'll see a list of all images. Click the image names and the image is
shown in the bottom half of the dialog box. Find the one you want and
click Save As. It's so simple to get around schemes like this that it
really isn't worth the effort. Yes, it will stop the newbie who knows
next to nothing from saving an image and using it on their desktop, but
the guy who wants to steal an image and sell 10,000 copies of it won't
even be slowed down.

Yes I know Gary, Thats what I was pointing out. The portfolio pages of my
site all open in cromeless windows so Page Info isnt immediately available.
My aim is to slow people down, make it a tad more difficult, but anyone with
a modicum of knowledge WILL get around it if they want to. I decided it
wasn't worth the effort of watermarking etc but this was easy to do and
since its all in a template very easy to repeat.
