Layout tables or Layers

Hello, I am voraciously consuming Dreamweaver/HTML materials and have
recently learned about some of the details of the LAYER that make me wonder why
I would use tables(layout tables). I understand that versions before I.E.4.0
will not support layers. However, the materials I am reading are dated and I
wonder if most web developers are forsaking tables for the use of layers and
perhaps only using tables within layers or only when a specific goal cannot be
achieved with Layers. Thank you!

Learn how to use tables until you can build ones that don't explode when you
add content.

Then learn CSS.

Forget about layers as a layout tool until you have done both.

Hello disturbingthepeace

I think Murray's advice is spot on, learn to create a design with tables,
whilst doing this learn about cascading style sheets then take the plunge
into css positioning. Once you get your head around the later you won't go
back to using tables but they are certainly a strong learning curve and
something everybody should be happy with.
