Launching excel application with a link

I have created a link to an Excel template (xlt) file. When activated it starts
Excel in a browser and opens the XLT file. I need it to launch Excel as excel
so it will open as a new document.

Any thoughts?

Not much you can do. How the file will be handled is completely up to
the browser and its configuration.
