others say just a few keywords anyone got any ideas on this?
Optimally each page on your site should be focussed on a few (different)
keywords or phrases - since your index page is likely to be the most
competitive in the rankings, it makes more sense to focus it on the most
competitive word (or phrase) that you are looking to rank well with.

Of course, the art is to pick a word or phrase that you are likely to have
some success with at the level your site is at - and not to expect to put a
new site up and to have it rank well for "viagra", for example.

Here's how it works, give or take:

SE's sucks up all words in the copy. When there are words that are more
frequent than others and counts up to around 3% of the text, the SE will
regard these as keywords. Words like "and", "if", "us" and similar will
be ignored in this respect.

On the other hand, they try to find out if the text is "real" copy, and
not e.g. invisible keywords in same color as background that you've put
there to get better ranking. They do that but looking if you have words
like "and", "if" and "us", i.e. words that actually appears in "real" copy.

With the above, you can figure out what you like to do. I don't want to
give any advice since the SE's might catch you "cheating" and pull your
site entirely.

However, fiddling with all that jazz above won't do very much, IMHO,
since there are several other parameters that'll improve your ranking.

1) Give you pages descriptive titles
2) Use h1-h6 for subtitles/headlines with selected keywords
3) Put descripte text in alt tags for images
4) Name images accurately. Not "top_image.jpg" but "porsche_911.jpg".
5) Try getting keywords as early in copy as possible
6) Give links descriptive names. Not "learn more" but "more about
Porsche 911".
7) Put copy inside <p> tags
8) Most important: Make other sites link to yours!
