Javascript - preventing duplicates.

Hi

I need a bit of javascript validation for the following problem as I am
almost a complete newbie with javascript.

I have three sections in my menu, each contains a dynamic number of items.
The client wants a page which he can choose which way to order these items.
I have managed this by displaying a table with the rows layed out as
follows:

Section | Item | Order By

Under the Order By column I have a drop down menu for each item, which has
the options of 1 to ?, depending on the number of items in the section.

The problem is how to not allow the user to select the same number for any
two items in the same section. This is what I need the javascript for.

Any ideas or pointers are more than welcome.
