Default javascript pop-up menus and templates - 06-29-2004 , 10:26 PM

Hi There
I have been having a problem with pop-up menus in templates. I have been
able to work out that you cannot use pop-up menus in templates, you can
however create an html page with a pop-up and then save it as a template.

Having read the technote here
http://www.macromedia.com/support/dreamweaver/ts/documents/popuptemplate.htm
I was under the impresssion that if I saved all the pages in the same
directory (i.e., every page made from the template) the pop-up menus would
work. This does not seem to be the case.
Do I need to save the templates in the same directory as the pages I am
making from the templates?
making the process
1. create template
2. save template to location in which all pages will be stored (e.g., folder
X)
3. create pages from template and save in folder (folder X)

or is it something else i need to do (i had thought dreamweaver
automatically save templates to the templates folder, but i guess there is a
way around this)

any help greatly appreciated.

No, templates are saved automatically into a Templates folder. There should
be nothing else beside the dwt files in there. Your actual child pages can
be saved anywhere within the root folder of your site - NOT the template
folder.

May I make a suggestion, that before you go any further with these pop up
menus, have a look here:

Thanks for the prompt reply Nadia :-)
I just tried moving all the pages into the template folder (and once i
remember to refresh the pages *sigh*) it all worked. Obviously, this is not
a solution as I don't want to have to keep all the pages in the templates
folder.
it's all fairly confusing to me atm.
I have had a look at the page you posted. It looks like a better solution,
but now of course I am faced with the age old question of whether to spend
extra time now for a more efficient solution, or just get the client what
they want ASAP.
thanks again nadia, appreciate it

The MM menus will haunt you as long as you use them. Spend an hour or
two learning to do menus right and you'll save yourself a LOT of time
and headaches down the road.

thanks guys, will do as you say. I get the distinct impression that they
just aren't worth it :-)
Does anyone have any recommendations regarding which of the three tutorials
listed on the page nadia pointed me towards is the best? (Project Seven's
Simple VII Menus, Project Seven's PVII Dropdown Menus, or YoungPup's
ypSlideOutmenus)
Normally I would play around with each of them, but I am running out of time
for this project, so i want to maximise my time where possible
thanks again

My suggestion would be the Dropdown menus if you are in a hurry. The
YoungPups is great too, but needs a bit of time to get your head around the
way they work. The pvii tutorial will teach you how to build dropdowns
correctly and once you get the basics down, you'll be able to build them in
your sleep :-)

You can actually build your menus using the standard DW show/hide layer
behaviour, but the advantage of using the pvii method is the use of their
extensions to make life a little bit easier.

Hope this helps.
