Ever since learning HTML and web building tools, I was taught to use index. html for my main page. Now, in my new job, the network administrator says we have a Microsoft webserver that requires the first page to be default.htm. I seem to remember there once was a definitive argument on using html vs. htm, but what about index vs. default? Is there a preference over one or the other these days? Does the Microsoft server really require default? Will I have to change my ways (sigh!)? |

Yes, you will! Sorry 'bout that. If the server requires default.ht* then it requires default.ht* It won't be pick about whether it's .htm or .html, but you should adopt whatever they're already using. |

Actually, the server admin tells the server/site explicitely what to use for the default pages. So both the file name AND extension are important, but also completely configurable on the server. |

Yes, you will! Sorry 'bout that. If the server requires default.ht* then it requires default.ht* Unless the server administrator takes two seconds to change the setting. :-) -- Patty Ayers | www.WebDevBiz.com Free Articles on the Business of Web Development Web Design Contract, Estimate Request Form, Estimate Worksheet -- |

Who cares? ![]() Use what the server needs and link to the directory, so the filename simply doesn't matter. Is there a preference over one or the other these days? Depends on the server configuration. Does the Microsoft server really require default? Will I have to change my ways (sigh!)? It could also be wurstbrot.hdml, if the admin had a bad day ... Micha |
