Importing Text w/o Background

I'm new and learning....

I need to create three words of text with a drop shadow in either Photoshop or
Paint Shop Pro...this, I can do...but I need to be able to import the text into
Dreamweaver as a graphic (.jpg or .gif) to place over a colored, textured
background I'm using as a banner. So...the background of the imported text
graphic must be transparent, not white. I can't figure out how to do this. Is
it possible? If so, how do I do it?

METHOD FOR ADOBE PHOTOSHOP:

File > New > Where it says "Contents" in the NEW Dialogue box, select
"Transparent"
