Default Image placement - 11-07-2005 , 01:19 PM

using dreamweaver mx 2004

All I want to do is this:
I have a large number of images of random sizes that need to be layed out in
such a way that simple tables just cant do. what I wanted was a seperate table
for each picture, but that apperently is too difficult a concept to utilize
(sounds simple to me but oh well). I can't use a table with 2 cells because
larger images will stretch the table to meet their needs which means I can't
put an image directly underneath the image next to the large image.

lets see if I can explain this:

Image 1 (200WX300H) Image 2 (200W X 600H)
image 3 (200WX400H)

If you take that as an absolute layout there will be 2 images on the left and
1 on the right. I cannot for the life of me get something that works like
that. Either the table is too large to put image 2 in, or image 2 stretches
the table even more so I could not put a fourth image under image 2. if you
visualize what I am saying you would see a 100 pixel gap now under image 2 so I
could not have an image under image 2 without having that gap. does this make
sense to anyone? Basically what I want is asymetrical tables I really wish I
could just put a table around each image so I can just place them like in the
example....I wanted to learn css but it is a really hard concept to wrap my
head around...Does anyone have any ideas as to how I could figure this out?

You might be able to do that w/o tables using CSS positioning but it may be a little convoluted.

grr...I was hoping you wouldn't have said that. actually is there a way just
to simply place 1 graphic next to another? I keep trying to do that and
dreameaver keeps putting it underneath the image. if I could let the images
themselves make the layout I would be happy. I just can't believe how stupid
this all is. I should be able to just put the images where I want them. I
have a layout of all the images in fireworks but I can't seem to get them to
work with the table that I am using. I ended up slicing the graphics out of
the layout and trying to do it in dreamweaver. I really just want to cut and
paste the png file into the table but oh well.

You can place them right next to each other with successive <image> tags or
you can drag and drop in Design view. But they'll be bumped into each other. If
you want to do anything formatting wise, CSS is the way to go.

actually I can't drag and drop in design view. any image I place instantly
goes underneath. I don't care at this point if they are butted together. I
was more concerned with just how the layout looks.

I mean drag the file from Windows Explorer and drop it into the document in Design view.

I got an 800x600 and a 100x100 image right next to each other that way.

Sigh I have been trying that all freaking day and it still puts the image underneath...I am at a complete loss.

well apperently it's the cell I am working with. If I make a new html page I
can place the graphics....If I try to put them into a table I can't get them
next to eachother. I have never had such a stupidly simple concept be so
difficult to actually do. How hard is it to place a dozen graphics into a
table?

Juts put them together in Photoshop or Fireworks for chrisakes!, and then use one cell of a table of a size that accomodates all of the images.

Otherwise, you need to go CSS, sorry to inform!

I don't understand what the difficulty is.
Why don't you simply make a two rows - two columns table, and place one
image in each cell?
Then keep adding rows if you have more images...
