Default I want my site to be centred in all browsers - 04-02-2009 , 06:33 PM

I want my site to be centred in all browsers. I have designed the entire site
by just using the layout tables. I have no CSS involved in my site cause I cant
really get my head around it. I went and changed some pages to sit in the
centre but I did this by increasing my page width to 1200 pixels and then
putting my site in the middle of that. But im pretty sure this isnt going to
work with different sized monitors. I not real good with code. i just use
everything in the design mode. Is there something in design mode which I can
just turn on to allow this centring feature to happen. Or could someone help me
run through how to set it up as CSS.

http://alt-web.com/TEMPLATES/CSS2-1-column-fixed-width-centered.shtml

View page source in browser to see the code.

Wow all that is really confusing to me. My site is live and it is
www.peakhealthyamba.com.au maybe you could check it out and see what i would
have to do. A few pages are centred but only by me using a 1200 Pixels layout
size and then leaving a 200pixel gap in the left column. Im bad with code.

I have never seen such a page. You could not possibly have built this
completely within Dreamweaver. No version of DW would create this code,
although I do see some DW snippets. The page has no Doctype, no
<head></head> tags, no <body></body> tags. I'm amazed it even displays.

Regardless, with no code knowledge/skills DW is a poor choice for you. You
are best served to either become comfortable with HTML & CSS or use one of
the cheap or free website assembly tools like Trellix or SiteBuilder. They
produce crap but no coding needed. There really are only those 2 choices.
Sorry.

I built the entire site with dreamweaver. I used CS3 for all my images. Some of
my borders were designed with CS3 so maybe thats why it seems not normal. This
is my first site I have built. I learnt how to do it through lynda.com
tutorials. So maybe they are teaching me incorrectly. It seems to work ok thou
am I right? So I guess even the computer geniuses cant work out my problem. I
thought you guys would be up for a challenge. So is my site a lost cause or can
I fix it. Or will I have to start from scratch again?

Guess as you wish but you are wrong. Centering a site is reasonably
simple... if you are willing to deal with code. There is no "Center Site"
button. Design view is OK but extremely limited. If you are willing to
settle for those limitations, and obviously you are not, you will be fine.
Clearly this approach is not acceptable so you have to move to the next
level -> An understanding of HTML & CSS and most importantly, how they
interact. I could give you the code but your next question would be, "Where
do I put it?".

We are. Are you?

That is the only way but only if you can figure out how your code got so
badly mangled. Otherwise, you are likely to arrive at the same result.
Please trust me when I say if you had build that entire page from DW's
design view and never touched the code it is impossible for the page code to
be what it is. If the page was actually build in DW design view someone
subsequently took a hatchet to the code DW produces.

Follow the link below to read a recent discussion about the
disadvantages of using DW's Layout Mode. It includes a link to a
page that helps explain it, too.

If you're in DW CS3 or earlier, here is the old way:

1. click inside the table
2. click the <table> element shown on the bottom left of the window
3. In the Property Inspector, select Align->Center

That would be the better way to handle the layout, but it is too
broad a subject for a newsgroup post. Start with the links Nancy
provided.

Mark Boyd answer was spot on. All I had to do was click inside the table. the
reason why I was having problems was because I never stopped working in layout
mode. But all i had to do was align in centre. You would think dreamweaver
would set there default to centre wouldnt you. thanks heaps mark. It so fricken
simple now and is going to help me alot.
