I want my site to be centred in all browsers

Mark Boyd answer was spot on. All I had to do was click inside the
table. the reason why I was having problems was because I never
stopped working in layout mode. But all i had to do was align in
centre.

Glad you got it going for now. If you study up on the modern methods,
you'll find maintenance and customization changes of sites much easier
in the future. Changing a single file and uploading it can give a site
an entirely different appearance - much harder to do with a legacy
table-based layout.

Notice that the structure of the HTML on the page doesn't change when
clicking on the different looks. Almost magical, but quite logical
instead.

You would think dreamweaver would set there default to
centre wouldnt you.

Heck no. I would hate to have to tell browsers to left justify all the
time - the default in all programs I'm aware of.
