Maybe third time lucky:

How do I get my website to appear among, say, Google's top ten listing when
a user searches? Do I need to use a search optimization engine? And what's
the cost for this? Just registering the site with Google doesn't guarantee
that it would come up among the first few sites. Any help would be
appreciated.

Unless you pay for a sponsored link it ain't going to happen unless
your site specilises in something very unusual that won't have many
other sites dealing with it.
How far up in the listing your site appears depends on the number of
other sites that have links to yours and the number of hits your site
recieves as a result of searches for the particular search engine, the
problem being that if you are a long way donw the list people might
stop or find what they want before reaching you.
You can try and maximise you listing by increasing the numbers of
Keywords on you main page htat can be matched with search words,
however if you place to many search engines will consider this abuse
of the system and not register you as a result.
