I came here soon after - when Macromedia announced they'd dump Drumbeat -
that was in 2000 or so.

It was an interesting ride/journey...

Best of luck to everyone.

I'm told, in another group not related but in threat of closure, that it
is very difficult to shut down a group - all the servers taking the
group and offering it continue to do so unless the original goes to
considerable effort to tell them all. It does mean, it seems, that spam
isn't removed and groups tend to fade away. (The person who mentioned
that produced evidence of groups closed by the "owning" company many
years ago but still available, with two people still populating one of
them, mainly chatting to each other - possibly never having noticed
there is nobody else there)

I have no idea if that is true (although the old groups mentioned do
still come up on 3 servers checked).

It is true. Just taking down a server doesn't remove a group from the
Usenet, even if it's the server where the group was initially created
on. The official way to remove a group is a special control message, but
Adobe didn't send one. So it's quite possible that these groups will be
around for quite a long time, but with no direct connection to the Adobe
web forums anymore (unless someone sets up another gateway server).
