Default http names on windows network - 11-02-2005 , 05:21 AM

Hi,

I use a Mac for most stuff I do but I am on a local Windows network, I use one
of the pc's as a testing server when I build sites that use ASP/Access. This
all basically works fine but the addresses on the network are all dynamic so if
I set up a site from my Mac with a testing server on a local network pc I enter
URL prefix for example http://192.168.0.50/folder/. This works but next day I
come to use it again and it has lost the connection because the Windows machine
has a new dynamic address. What I really want is http://machinename/folder/.
The pc has a network name when I link through smb but doesn't seem to work
through http. Anyone know if this is possible?

Thanks, Mark.

What's the reason for switching IP addresses in a local network? Sounds
rather useless to me. What's wrong with a fixed address and a hostname?

Micha

erm, it's something to do with our router and adsl connection - i'm sure you're
right but it's not really an option for me to change this because our it guy
(who has a mac phobia) has control of this - i just have to fit in.
