You have an improperly defined site. Templates will not work with an FTP &
RDS Server defined site. Please read my last post carefully.

I did this, but this is another website on my hard drive. It will not let
me
create a template, or upload it to the FTP site. I just made this other
site
(regular site) so I could create the template, but when I apply the
template to
a page, it does not look the same as the template.

Sorry. I'm new at all of this.

"When you look at the site name in the list of sites on the upper, left-hand
corner of the Files panel, do you see a folder icon or a computer icon?"
There is a computer in front.

Yes - that means you have defined your site as an FTP & RDS site - you are
editing the files directly on the server. Templates will not work in such
sites, and furthermore, you run extreme risk of making a silly mistake and
losing your only copy of the an important file since you are editing the
LIVE files.

Please create a NEW site, as I described. Then connect to your old site and
GET all the files into the new site. Now your templates will work, BUT THEY
ONLY MODIFY LOCAL FILES, which must be uploaded (PUT) to the remote site
once again.

Now the old site is the FTP connection one, right? So how would I get all of the files into the new site I just created?

Enter the FTP connection information in the Remote site part of the site
definition. Connect to the site. GET the files.

When you initially create a site as an FTP & RDS site, you receive this
prompt -

"Server connections allow you to work directly on the server using FTP or
RDS, but they do not allow you to perform sitewide operations like link
checking or site reports."

Unfortunately, that prompt does not also mention that neither Library items
nor Templates will work....

Alan:

In such a site definition, there is *no* Remote category. There is just the
server. I have found no way to change an existing FTP & RDS site back to a
regular site....

Open this site definition for editing.
In the remote server info section, set the connection type as plain FTP

In the Local info section, pick a Local Site Folder.

Now open this site in dw, and go to the Files Panel.
Select all the remote files, and GET them.

Did you base your template on a asp server model? Are you using asp? Can you
just start over and select no testing server in your site preferences. Then
create an html template.
