Default How to replace a site, also naming pages - 11-09-2004 , 02:22 PM

A couple of questions here (sorry I am a complete beginner, these are very
basic questions). I've been given the task of completely redesigning my
company's website. We're just going to scrap the old one completely and start
from scratch. I'm planning on using the DWMX 2004 halo CSS page template
because I don't know any html or css. My first question is: why do all the
existing page names start with 'SN'? Does this mean 'site navigation'? Do I
need to name all the new pages that too? What's the purpose of calling it
'SN___'? The site is www.mncia.org in case you want to see. My second
question is: what is the exact procedure for replacing an entire site? Can I
just FTP all the new files on and then replace the old index page with the new
index page? How do I tell the remote server what page to send people to when
they type in our URL? Thanks so much!

Why do companies task people to do something that don't have the skillsets
to do it?

Who knows? Probably that last person to work on the site.

If you're starting from scratch, it's entirely up to you.

The only reason to name everything exactly the same is to make sure any
existing links to your site don't break.

Build a new site. Erase the old on on the server, upload the new files.

That's a setting on the server. Do you have access to your server directly?
If not, just ask the ISP to change it if you need to.

Please don't take these comments as anything other than advice.

Personlly, having spent quite a bit of time working on the Halo templates, I
think a) you have no business doing this jpb at your current experience
level, and b) you have no business starting with the Halo layout. There's
pretty advanced dHTML and CSS used there.

Why not hire someone who could do this job right the first time in 10% of
the time it would take you to do it?

While I agree with your logic, I think it's better than outsourcing the job to a third world country.

Why not hire someone who could do this job right the first time in 10% of the
time it would take you to do it? Because that would mean that the company
would have to spend some money. More often then not, the job
(intranet/internet) is assigned to individuals who little or no experience to
save money. I know first hand - I am assigned to support 40+ individuals from
each business group who are assigned to update their site areas. Companies do
this rather than invest in a real web design group!

And you, taking 10 times longer to do the job, and building a site that
breaks at every puff of wind is not a waste of their money?

But any sane manager would know that it costs money to have your employees
working on tasks they aren't trained to do.

In the long run, it always costs more money NOT to pay to have it done right
the first time.

It's just like companies investing in hardware and software but not
training. It boggles the mind how some of these companies stay in the black.
