You can't really tell whether a user is on broadband or on avian
carriers ...

Ah! What you do is tell the user that you are going to run a series of tests,
when they first get to your website. You output forms and tell them to send
them back as soon as possible. You do this about 10 times, until you have
built up a statistical view of the turn-round time. Then you act accordingly.

Of course, no one will bother to complete these tests, so no one will ever see
your website ....

Micha's tongue-in-cheek response aside...

Your best bet is probably voluntary. Provide a 'portal' page, with links
to low-bandwidth and high-bandwidth versions of your site, and let people
decide which one to go with. Even better - provide some real content on
the first page of your site, and provide links, clearly identified, to
your high-bandwidth gee-whiz stuff. That way, if your lower bandwidth
visitors want to suffer through the wait, they have the choice.

There are javascript methods of determining connection speed. I seem to
recall that they involve setting up a timer, downloading a file, checking
the time onload, guessing at the connection speed and serving the
appropriate page. My guess would be that this is not all that accurate.

Make a home page.

Put two links on it:

--> Click here for our fast, well coded, light-weight site that will get you
to what you are looking for ASAP.

--> Click here for our bloated, bells-and-whistles-all-flash-with-music web
site. It's really cool!

;o)

Seriously, if you want to sites, simply ask people which site they want.
Otherwise, rethink the 'broadband' site to see if you really need it, or, if
you do, see if you can develop a streamlined site that simply uses the
broadband content only where appropriate.

The bigger problem is that any type of programatic detection is only
detecting hardware/software. It does nothing to detect user preferences.

I'm on broadband. Given the choice, I never choose the 'broadband site'
option.
