How to make the best photo transitions.

I am a photographer and have been building my own web portfolios for
years. It has proven very benefical for me to build them in HTML for
search engine friendliness. But man, those flash sites look good. Of
course, no one sees them, but man they look good. In particular, I
love the smooth transitions from one photograph to another. My sites
always are super simple ( http://www.studiocp.com ), but I have always
been bugged by clunky redraws. At the very least I would like to limit
the "flicker" of the redraw, like the whole background blinking.

Is there anything I should know before I begin a new portfolio from
the ground up. I am using Dreamweaver 6.
