Default How do I protect my code & pictures? - 05-07-2004 , 10:55 AM

Can anyone please recommend a way (or product) that will protect my website's
code and pictures from being stolen...I mean "copied"?

I heard that there are encryption programs available...can anyone recommend a
dependable program?

Thanks,
Ron

Anything that is client-side cannot be protected

You can't protect the stuff.

Your informants have mislead you. There is no way to do this that is worth
the time or the effort.

Go to the DW FAQ link in my sig and read the images FAQ - you'll find a
comprehensive discussion of your options there.

Yes. Don't post them on the internet.

Better erase them from your own hard drive too, just in case someone else
gains access to your computer. ;-)

[snip]

I have several 100s of photographs on the web. I make no attempt to protect
them. I can't think how it would benefit me to do so.

I am currently evolving my policy about my photographs, based on recent
experience. I may end up with something like this:

- You are free to copy my thumbnails into your own galleries, as long as they
link to the same page that those thumbnails do on my own sites, and you credit
me alongside the thumbnail.

- If you want to use one of my web-sized photographs on you own website,
please email me first so that we can discuss conditions. This will include
providing links and credit, but for non-commercial use by non-commercial
organisations, I will normally allow it at no cost. And I may provide a
reverse link.

- If you want the larger version, of which the web version is a small
imitation, email me, but expect to pay quite a lot for it.

In a word you can't. There is no sure fire way to stop someone from copying
your graphic. There used to be an online site - forgot the name of it now -
that offered some kind of encryption but they are not around anymore.

There is a code to disable "right-clicking" on an image but that only works
when someone is using Internet Explorer as their browser. This code won't work
in Netscape (and I don't know about the other browsers).

About the closest solution I have seen (besides just not putting the picture on
the Internet) would be to watermark the image.

There are several ways to copy the image and I can tell you at least 5 of them
that come to mind right now!
