Default How do I: No indent on unordered list text - 11-15-2005 , 04:43 PM

I'm attempting to apply some CSS styling to a ul. All I want is to push the
indent of the bullet out to the same margin as the paragraph text and have the
remaining lines of text of the list item not indent as well. For example, right
now I have an unordered list, the bullets are indented from the paragraph text
and then the remaining lines of text wrap underneath and are also indented from
the bullet such that subsequent lines of text indent and align nice and neatly.

That's very nice. Now, how do I get that to look basically the same but rather
align with the paragraph margin? Setting the TEXT INDENT command under BLOCK in
the CSS Style Definition dialog to -25 px pushes the bullet and first line of
text out to the same margin as the proceeding paragraph, but the continuing
lines of text that wrap after the first line of the list item are indented way
in where they were originally.

Thanks in advance.

*Dave

When working with lists, it's usually easiest to set all margins and
paddings to 0, then adjust to suit.

ul, li {
margin:0;
padding:0;
}

In separate ul and li rules, you can then add back whatever margins and
paddings will work for you (your text-indent of -25 is really just
overcoming one of the margin/padding defaults). It's important to zero them
first because some browsers will use margin and some padding. By making
everything 0, you can be sure that everyone is starting from the same
reference point.

Yup, got that. I figured out that zeroing the pad and margin is a more
intelligent approach. So, now everything is pushed out to the margin, which is
great. Unfortunately, so is the text that wraps to the second and third lines
of a bullet. I want those lines of wrapping text to align with the text of the
first line, not the margin where the bullet is. Think hanging indent in print
design.

How do I make this happen with CSS?

li { padding:10px; }

I think adding this will do what you want (align the second line of text
with the first):

list-style-position: inside;

That's nope and nope on the last two responses. Thanks for trying, though.
Adding padding simply moves the entire list over. What I want it to do is leave
the first line where it's at (the margin) and move the second line over.
Setting the position had no effect.

The text in the list item will align itself by default. I'm a little lost
as to what you're doing now. I thought you were just trying to set the
bullet margin so that the bullet itself would line up with your paragraph
text. Are you trying to get subsequent lines of text to NOT line up with
the first? Or what?
