Default How do I make pages open from top? - 11-01-2004 , 03:00 PM

Hi,

I am relatively new to using Dreamweaver (MX 2004) and I was wondering how I
can set the order that the items on my pages will load? There are no big
files on the pages - i.e one picture (about 10k) and some tables and layers.
What I am finding is that the page will start by opening an 'object' half
way down, then go to the logo, then back to something near the bottom of the
page - all in all, not very pleasant to watch

Ideally I would like the page to start loading from the top and work down. I
am sure I must be overlooking something very simple!!!

Advice greatly appreciated.

Gary

Just let it load, it's about the only thing you can do, text loads quicker
than images, images load quicker than media files, cached images load
quickly, images not uploaded don't load at all, images using css won't load
as quicker than just plonking them in a table ( well maybe they could
actually) all in all you are not in control to how all this stuff shows and
order, you might prefer a loading layer but they don't really do anything as
the user likes to see content asap.Just let it go and get on with your site,
this is trivia.

Cheers

You can't. The are requested in the order they appear in the source code,
but each request can take a different route so there's no way to ensure they
all come back in the same order.

Well, that's the internet for you. ;o)

You could put a giant preloader on the page, but, honestly, that's more
annoying than watching the actual content load, so I'd just accept that this
is how the web works and let it be.

Squeeze every ounce of extra weight out of your images with ruthless
optimization. Clean up your code to remove nested tables with col- and
rowspans. Get rid of unnecessary fluff, and keep your total page weight
below about 50K (including all externally linked files).

This problem will go away if you do that.

What I meant by that was if you designed a site in a such a way that your
code was so optimised by the use of divs css-p compared to a site dredged
with td's then the image would do download quicker because the whole weight
of the page changes.

I'm drunk btw

Thanks for the replies chaps. At least I don't feel so stupid now, by

thinking I overlooked something very straightforward.

Cheers,

As well as the other suggestions offered...
I'd also ensure that all images have their height and width attributes
set. This will prevent the page from jumping around while being
loaded. The user will have something to read while everything else
gets put into place.
