Images don't stretch well in browsers. Could you achieve your goal with a
single instance of the image against a colored background that fills the
space?

Images don't stretch. This logo is 800 pixels wide. Different monitor sizes
won't change that.

Anyhow, it looks fine to me as a centered image.

Of course images *can* stretch, but it is a bad technique, e.g.,

<img width="100%"....

because it is not fully compatible and it produces nasty results with
anything other than line art or solid color GIFs.

An image 800 px wiode can never be more than 800px wide. You can re-size it
to 900px wide but you will lose a considerable amount of quality.

A line art image 800px wide can be easily made 900px wide in the browser and
you may never notice it. A photo 500 px wide might yield unacceptible
results if made only 515px wide.

To say that an image cannot be stretched is misleading and untrue. To say
that it is bad practice is partially correct, depending on the image.
