Default How do I find the cymk/rgb value of a hexadecimal colour number? - 11-25-2006 , 08:45 AM

Hi

I'd be very grateful if anyone could let me know if there is a way to find
the cymk/rgb value of a hexadecimal colour number within DW MX2004.

If not can you point me to any online resources?

Thanks a lot.

Ian

Any image editor can give you this.

Otherwise, some here recommend freeware called Pixie

well, in the Properties panel, or CSS editing, or any other field that
allows you to choose a color, you can enter in the HEX number, like #336699,
and then click on the color swatch. that brings up the "web safe" (sic)
palette and in the top right there is a "color wheel" - click on the wheel.
This will bring up a Windows Color panel. It will list what the color is in
RGB in this panel.

why go online, you can already do this with a calculator that's built-in to
Windows. HEX values are just RGB values in hexadecimal format. The colors
are always in Red, Green, Blue order. In HEX, each pair of #s is an RGB
value. So in the case of #336699, 33 is the hex for the R value, 66 is the
hex for the G value, and 99 is the hex for the B value.

In Windows, do a Start | Run and in the dialog box, type in Calc and click
on OK. If you have a hex value you want to conver to RGB, click on the HEX
radio button and then type in your two character hex value. Then just click
on the DEC radio button to convert hexadecimal to decimal. 33hex = 51dec
(R), 66hex = 102dec (G), 99hex = 153dec (B).

Likewise, if you wanted to go from RGB to HEX, just do the opposite, type in
the DEC value and click on the HEX radio button to convert to HEX.

As for CMYK, forget it. RGB/HEX is the colorspace used for the web.

Hunter

Thank you very much.

Wow! I had no idea the Hex value was derived in that way - just shows how
little I know!

I'm very grateful and wiser.

you're more than welcome, Ian! In my workflow, I don't even pay attention to
a HEX value until I get to DW. When I'm using my graphics apps, I just use
whatever colors I feel like (within the RGB or PMS palette). If I need to
utilize the same colors via CSS, etc, I will then just use the color picker
in DW and enter in the RGB values and let it determine the HEX conversion
for me - I find that a lot faster.

Now, there are times when I'm trying to find a palette of colors that work
together - then I do find many of the online "palette facilities" to be a
great boon.

Even faster: Paint Shop Pro already shows the hex value in its color
selector. Just copy 'n paste.
