Default How to create links to other websites? - 08-05-2004 , 10:47 PM

I am a beginner and am using Dreamweaver MX. I am building a site and wish to link to other pages on the web. I'm sure it is quite simple, but I can't seem to figure it out.

select the text or image.
In the Property Inspector- in the LINK box, type the full correct URL.
Be sure to start it with http://

http://www.macromedia.com/somepage.html

It's not a bad idea to browse to the page, Copy the URL from the browser's
Address bar, and Paste it into the Link box.

Highlight the text or image that is to be used as a link. Then type in the
fully qualified URL in the "Link" field in the property inspector. The
highlighted text or image becomes the link.

By fully qualified, I mean something like:

http://www.somedomain.com/index.html

You cannot just start with "www".

It would depend on HOW you want to create the links. Are you wanting to make
images into links, or do yu just want to make text into a link?

For an image:
insert the image into your web page...click on the image to "select it". Then
in the bottom "properties" task pane (the bottom part of the dreamweaver window
is called the properties task pane, or properties area) you will see a a text
field that says "link". In this field type in the link to whatever site you
would like to link to. be sure to use the http:// prefix.

To make text into a link, type the text you want to be a link. it can be
anything, but should be a descriptive term for ease of recognition by your
viewer. Now highlight that text and go to the top of the page. Click on the
INSERT tab and then the HYPERLINK tab. a pop up window will appear with the
fields that you need to fill in for the link to work.

TEXT: This should already have the text you highlighted in it.
LINK: type in the URL for the link you want to make....IE
http://www.americanheritageoutdoors.com (hehehe sorry bout the plug)
TARGET: If you want the new page to open in the EXISTING open window choose
_parent...if you want it in a NEW window choose _Blank. Remember that MOST
people hate a page that opens up new windows when they visit a link. Usually
_parent is the best choice. (I know some would disagree with me, and in some
cases other options are indeed better)
TITLE:for text links I usually leave this blank. It is the option that makes
a pop up text box appear when the viewer scrolls over the link. This is the
same as the "alt" field in the properties box at the bottom. The Alt field is
where you put any text that you want to pop up when the viewer scrolls over the
link. Type in any words that you would like to pop up. Im under the
impression that search engines also see this text and it helps with the
indexing of your site, but I dont know that for a fact. Cant hurt!
ACCESS KEY: To be honest Ive never used this, and Im not sure what it does...
TAB KEY: Again...I dont use it.

Make sense? Hope it helps
