Default How can I do this? - 04-19-2004 , 04:15 AM

I need to include a search for members of an association throughout the UK , my
idea is this:

1. Produce a map of the UK similar to this,
http://www.friendsreunited.co.uk/FriendsReunited.asp?WCI=SelectSchool

2. I'd like to go a stage further and break down the regions into counties,
i.e. the 'South East' the darkest lower right hand area of the above map
consists of 'Kent', 'Surrey', 'Berkshire', 'Buckinghamshire' and 'Hampshire'.

So my thought was, Map of the UK, click region, that then enlarges to a bigger
map of the region showing the counties, then finally, click on a county, i.e.
'Surrey' and this would then show a list of all members in that county.

I have Flash, Fireworks, Freehand and obviously DW, if that helps.

Kind regards

Alan

Alan,
The map step from country to couty is straight forward. One could then make
pages with the members in the county. If this information changes often or
is growing then the members pages will be a maintence nightmare. Of course
if your being paid by the hour... or the client uses Contribute... It has
the benefit of being simple to design but work to maintain.

The members page would be maintence free if you use a database (i.e., SQL or
MYSQL) and ASP, NET or PHP. DWMX4 does this type of thing very easily and it
can be done without your ever having to write any code. DW will do it all.
Revew the help files on database driven web sites in DW.

This does increase the size of the site you must design. I typically provide
a secure section for the site owners/managers that consists of a login in a
subfolder. There I have a login page, a control page with links to pages
that allow the entry of a new member, deletion of a member, member editing
and three similar pages for manager ID/passwords. DW even allows one to have
levels with the password control. If needed I typically have administrators
and managers. In the ID/password database I add a level field. DW then
allows one to spec which level has access to the page. Or I hide parts of
the pages depending on user level.
