Default Help with Templates - 03-31-2009 , 07:24 PM

Hi everybody.

Basically I created a template that I want to use throughout my entire site.
However from that main template I also need to create other templates.

I am making a site about airplanes.

So for example I have made my main template with banner etc....but I am making
a section about the Boeing 737 and want to make my own template just for the
737 section of the site that includes a spry menu so people can navigate the
various models of 737 etc..

So I have applied the main template to a html page and then created a spry
menu. I then save this page as a template. How do I make an editable region
from the new template into an uneditable region? For instance I want the spry
menu to be un-editable so it will update all the other pages the 737 template
is applied to. But because the new template is based on the main template this
region is editable and I dont know how to change it.

I hope you can understand what I am trying to explain.

If someone could help me it would be great.

Thanks.

Don't. This will not make your life easier.

I'm trying! 8)

Your best bet would be to use a single template with an editable region
where your section-specific navigation would go. Then just drop a
server-side include in the child pages containing the desired navigation
elements. Much, much better and easier than nested templates ever would be.

Dear Newsgroup User

Im just writing to express my gratitude for your help.

I took your advice and scrapped the idea of havng multiple templates and I am
now totally rebuilding my site using Server side includes for navigation
instead. So far its working very well. Much less hassle and more reliable(many
links were broken with the old templates system and updating was a major
headache!)

So once more thanks for your help.

Cheers.

You're very welcome. While using templates in and of themselves can be a
great convenience, bringing multiple templates or worse, nested templates
into the picture is only a complication that can be easily avoided. I must
also say that using templates does not cause broken links, however. It's
quite possible to manage very complex sites with templates - I do it....

Hi again....sorry to keep asking you but if you have the time could you help
again?

Basically on my site I have now just one main template apllied to every page.
This template includes a horizontal spry menu that expands down into
sub-categories going accross the top of the page. The menu works fine on pages
that dont have a Server side Include menu but unfortunatley on the pages that
do have server side includes the main menu will no longer expand.

Do you know what could be causing this and how to fix it?

Hi ok

So heres my homepage: http://www.metalbirds.net/index.shtml

Now hover over the Boeing menu and scroll down and click B787 at the
bottom(its the only link working at the minute). Now you will get to the 787
pages(actually just jibberish at the mo) but you can see the menu on the left
collum I have created using SSI. Now that menu works fine.

However if you try and expand the menu at the top again nothing happens.

You have errors on that page that are preventing the menu from operating -

http://validator.w3.org/check?verbose=1&uri=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.metalbirds.ne t%2Fboeingheavys%2F787main.shtml

Can you see your way to fixing those?
