Could someone be so kind as to explain simply how templates work. As I
understand it, if you create a template page and then create child pages from
the template, any change you make in the template will be propagated to the
child pages when saving.
I have done this but the changes are not going through and the child pages are
not updating.
When saving the template after making changes,
http://www.greg.cole.name/updateing.gif is the message window I see. I just
don't understand it. This is my first attempt at using templates so maybe I'm
missing something.

To quote the template sage:

Here are five ways to make changes not propagate from Template to child

1. Rename the Templates folder
2. Move the Templates folder to some other folder level in the site
other than root level
3. Move a template out of the Templates folder.
4. Make changes to an editable region of the template (which will not
propagate)
5. Corrupt the site cache so that the link between template and child
page is broken

The latter problem can be repaired by using SITE | Advanced > Recreate
Site Cache, and the three others can be fixed by just not doing them.
Have you done any of those?

Thanks for the reply Gary. I don't think 1, 2, 3, and 5 are the problem as I
haven't done any of this and the files open, preview and link correctly when I
do it manually.

Number 4 on the other hand just smacks me in the face and says *how could you
be so stupid and not know this*. It looks like I've been changing the contents
of the editable regions and thats why it doesn't work. I take it then that if
I define new layers, objects etc it will propagate.

I am doing an all css site and trying to do it from a template (and not
knowing anything about either) I have a lot to learn.

Thanks for the help Gary

Yep! If changes inside editable areas propagated to child pages, it
would overwrite the unique content of those child pages. Clearly not a
good thing. :-) If you make changes OUTSIDE editable areas, those
changes WILL propagate.
