Default help combining rollovers with js menus - 04-01-2009 , 11:35 AM

I'm building a site and have hit a roadblock. I've created javascript menus
(adapting code a friend gave me) that work perfectly, except for the fact that
the main menu items are currently text, but I'd like them to appear as tabs
that I've created with rollover images. The submenus are working perfectly,
using an image background that repeats on the x axis.

I have built 2 samples of the page; one with each of these features, that I'd
like to combine into one. So far I've been unsuccessful in my attempts to get
this to work.

Each of the pages can be seen at:
http://www.oaddesign.com/spm/index.html (this one has the working text menus
and submenus)
http://www.oaddesign.com/spm/index2.html (this one has the rollover images
with no submenus)

If there's a way to get the submenus to work with the rollover main menu
items, I'd love any help I can get.

Thanks,

Thanks for pointing out the errors...I'm fairly new to css, so I appreciate the
help, and will fix the problem areas.

As for the accessibility issue, I could have easily created the menus in
Flash, but decided against it for that very reason. My feeling is that
javascript has proliferated widely enough to the point where I'm not concerned
about accessibility...as a matter of fact, the menus function perfectly on my
iPhone. Beyond that, I'm using alt tags for each of the menu selections, which
I assume will be spoken by the computers of those who cannot read.

Thanks for the referral to the DW add-on (which is pretty slick), but I posted
to this Forum with hopes that I could solve my problem by gaining knowledge,
and without spending $90 to re-create something that I've spent a significant
amount of time creating.

Good decision. Flash would have been a leap from the frying pan into the
fire.

Try using it on a workstation without a mouse. Try using it with javascript
disabled.

So - they'll know what they are missing? They will hear the top choices but
not be able to navigate below them.

Of course it's your choice. As I said, you would have none of these
problems with that menu. Nevertheless, that cost will pale in comparison to
the going forward issues you face if you stick with "your friend's"
creation.

My guess is that non-mouse/non-javascript-enabled systems are very rare. And
I've got alt tags for all of the submenu items as well, so they would in fact
be accessible. My CSS 'textbook' (written by two DW experts) supports the use
of javascript, so that's good enough for me.

I've seen quite a few posts where you peddle your wares; IMHO not exactly the
purpose of this Forum. How working with my current code to get the menus to
work without your DW add-on would cost me more money is beyond me.

Again, I posted here for help or to learn how to solve my problem...not to buy
software. I've already spent a significant amount of money buying the CS3
suite, which already includes the tools necessary to achieve what I'm trying to
accomplish.

Add to that your intimation (through the use of quotation marks) that the help
my friend gave me is somehow illegitimate is not only false, but unappreciated
and unfair as well. The truth is that I asked him about a site he'd designed
that used horizontal menus, asking him how he did it (the spry menus only drop
vertically). He emailed me the javascript and css and said I could work with it
for my site. I'm still working with the css to try to eliminate most of the
absolutely-positioned divs, which I've learned I should avoid (the index2.html
sample).
