Hooray,

Can I assume the table page with footer at layout works in everything on
everything and all is right with the world and I can get onto doing
something useful with the design now I won't be tripped up by this footer in
the future?
Go on....take this browser/OS challenge, find one it won't work
in....please. I'm keen to see just how robust putting these pages in an
outer table really is.

Tks very much for helping thus far Osgood and Dan

Dan it works in Firefox on my Mac. The grey <div>?

Ahh..yes. I *can* see it...
I didn't even see it before since it's only 12-14 px high.
Mea culpa.

Works pretty well in Opera 6 for mac as well. The <div> is about 10px up
from the bottom but that'll do for me in that browser.

You want that as a footer? In Firefox 0. on Mac, it's vertical center.

The footer example works fine in Firefox 0.8 on OS-X 10.3.4
