Default Good CSS reference book - 11-03-2005 , 10:38 AM

Hi,

Can anyone advise a good book for reference for CSS?

I have been using css in dreamweaver for a year or so now for type and
background styling etc. but would like to take the next step and start creating
entire sites using this method (positioning).

I have come across some great tutorials and help online but would just like a
reference book. As I've mentioned already, I have a very basic knowledge of css
and am really not a great techie, so would need something that will start with
the basics as if i know nothing but will also serve as a reference point as my
skill set builds. 'The CSS Anthology " keeps cropping up, but would like
opinions from your good-selves as to whether this would suit and if not, what
would?

Thanks

h

Anything by Eric Meyer; specifically,I'd suggest "CSS: The Definitive
Guide" (http://www.oreilly.com/catalog/css2/).

the two CSS books by Dan Cederholm are the best, in my opinion. They are
very good because they deal with CSS from a practical point of view, in a
simple and clear manner, with real-world examples.

Avoid anything by Eric Meyers, except his "Definitive Guide" (O'Reilly, I
think). The guy has no idea about real-world use of CSS, and his last two
books show it. Cederholm has a much better understanding of practical uses
of the technology and provides better-looking examples. After all, CSS is
all about "presentation"...

Not a book, but if you haven't seen it yet, will save you time in
understanding the basics of css positioning:

I tend to avoid extreme, misleading statements like this.

Thanks guys, didn't mean to start any arguments though...

they are all great suggestions and very helpful in my quest.

there are 2 books i've come across in the meantime and would like opinions
from those who have used them

one is the famous "zen" one and the other is "Stylin' with CSS : A Designer's
Guide by Charles Wyke-Smith" -

*remembering that i am a designer, so need a bit of spoon feeding!

Cheddy,

if you're a designer, you'll love the Cederholm books. Go to a nearby Barnes
and Noble (if you are in the USA) and leaf through some of the
recommendation in this thread. That should give you a little bit of an idea
of what books will fit you best.

Good luck!
