Default Going to be working on a website for a restaurant .... - 11-11-2004 , 03:49 AM

Should I 'piggyback' the site to my personal site so I can put it online so my
client can see it? I have my personal site at http://www.davidrossdesign.us
I'm not going to get an address for the restaurant site until I'm completely
finished with the design of it. So should I, in the meantime, make the pages,
say for example: davidrossdesign.us/menu ? davidrossdesign/aboutus, etc.??
Thanks for all the great help you all give, this forum has helped a ton.

I would make a folder called (for example) restaurant and publish the
entire site in it. Then your client can view it by going to

http://www.davidrossdesign.us/restaurant/

Password protecting the folder is an option if you want to restrict access
to it.

Good idea Steve. How would I password protect just the restaurant folder? I
have some dreamweaver books here - it's probably explained in them. So when I
create a page I will name it menu.htm and just put it in the restaurant folder?
? Also, are you American and you live in Hong Kong and do web design there?
Cool. Man I know Im up late when im talking to people in Hong Kong. lol

Just a thought. Is it worth securing or at least parking the domain name
before getting too far down the track to stop an opportunist grabbing it and
trying to sell it back to you/restaurant?

You mean someone could really steal the site somehow? So they would just have to copy the code and take all the images or what?

No, you name it index.htm and put it in the restaurant folder.

otherwise you would need to type into the browser

http://www.davidrossdesign.us/restaurant/menu.htm to activate it

index.htm is a starting point which a browser looks for so there is no
need to type for instance

http://www.davidrossdesign.us/restaurant/index.htm

I think Lossed in referring to someone reserving your preferred domain name
ahead of you.

Extreme cases of this are known as cybersquatting
http://www.tipz.net/cybersquating.htm

But it's common not to be able to get your first or second choice of domain
name because they're already taken. If someone owns a domain name which you
simply have to have, you may pay above market rates to purchase it from
them.

So, if you know the job is proceeding and have a signed contract in place,
part of your service may be to reserve the domain name for the client - this
is often one of the first steps you'd take.

Does it sometimes depend on your host? I mean could it be default.html for
one host whereas another might need index.htm or?

yes, and as it's a restaurant, they have probably got allot invested in
their name so I was thinking it would be worth securing that if it made
sense to the owners.
